Contrary to some perceptions, traveling to South Africa with firearms is not a complicated process and actually much easier than what you may think.
There are some restrictions pertaining to the type of firearms that may be temporarily imported for purpose of hunting and these include any fully automatic or semi automatic rifle as well as handguns that are not recognized being suitable for hunting big game. Semi automatic shotguns and handguns can be imported subject to sufficient motivation in writing by you stating why you wish to hunt with these firearms. We will assist you with this process if required.
To apply for a temporary import / export permit you need to complete and submit a SAPS520 form accompanied by the following supporting documentation:
- Notarized copy of the picture page of your passport.
- Proof of ownership of the firearm(s) in the form of a US Customs form 4457 (in the case of US Citizens), a firearms license or "Proof of Export" (Canadian Citizens). Copies of these documents must be notarized and certified as true copies of the original.
- A letter from us confirming the dates of your hunt, place of your hunt, what animals are to be hunted and that the firearms you are importing are suitable for the animals you will hunt.
- A copy of your flight schedule.
You can apply for your temporary import / export permit at your point of entry into South Africa but it is also possible to do so in advance through one of the several firearms assistance companies who specialize in providing this service such as Africa Sky Guesthouse or Hunters Support.
