2022 Hunting Season

Wow, it is good to be hunting again! With my season now at an end I thought I might share some pics and stories about this year’s hunts. Our first official hunt of the season was with long-time clients and friends – Cody and TJ from AB Canada. Cody and his brother hunted with us the first time in 2016 at which time he told me about his dream to one day hunt Cape Buffalo.

In 2017, when I was at the Calgary Boat and Sportsmen’s show in Calgary, Cody visited me at my booth and introduced me to his mom – a darling lady – whose only request was that, should Cody ever come hunt buffalo with me, I should please take care of him…

Comparing prices

A gentleman approached me at my booth at the International Sportsmen's Expo in Salt lake City today and asked me why my prices are so much more expensive than those of other safari operators.

I was a little surprised as, in my opinion my rates and fees are very much market-related and not expensive at all...

2021 Hunting Season

No one could have predicted what 2020 would have in store for any of us - especially for us in the tourism and safari industry.

But fortunately, 2020 passed and whilst we were still not able to operate to full capacity in 2021, we still had a marvelous season.

A typical day on Safari with Chris Troskie

You awake to the sound of a Cape Turtle dove outside… “work harder, work harder, work harder…” he calls. In the distance Guinea Fowl are cackling, and they are joined by Crested Francolin in a raucous chorus… Unfamiliar sounds they are, and you ask yourself: “Is this a dream?”

Exciting new functionality

Having exhibited at many trade shows for many years, one question invariably comes up - especially from folks who are considering their first African hunt:

"What will my African safari end up costing me?"

Whilst it is fairly simple to provide a potential customer with a quote on his daily rates and trophy fees, we all know that this is not where it stops. What about taxidermy work and - very importantly - what will it cost you to get your trophies home?

The Matador (as published in Man Magnum Magazine - March 2017

"Mr Troskie, Mr Troskie!" I heard Sammy's voice calling. Then Again: "Mr Troskie!!!" I looked around and at first could not see him. "MR TROSKIE!!!" (This time there was more urgency in his voice). Then I finally saw him - about two metres up in a knob thorn tree… "You are a matador now?" "Sammy, what on earth are you talking about? I can see you are high in a tree - but are you high on drugs now also? Get out of that tree!" "A matador Mr Troskie, like in the Spanish bullfights!"

The Difference between Private Safaris and "Safaris"

CT Safaris has prided itself from day one on producing exclusive and private safaris but what does this mean and what is the difference between "safaris" and "private safaris"?

“Canned” or "Put-and-Take" Hunting

I’ve spent considerable time these last few few weeks capturing and relocating Buffalo and it got me thinking about the above topic...

South Africa has had its fair share of negative publicity for some of the hunting practices followed by unscrupulous Operators. Unfortunately many of these practices take place under the “guise” of “sustainable use” and I find this regrettable as in my opinion there is a big difference between

(1) sustainable utilization of wildlife resources through hunting and;

(2) releasing animals in a small camp for the sole purpose of killing them (i.e. canned hunting).

"Little Warrior" as published in Man Magnum Magazine - March 2016

There's an unwritten rule in the South African PH community as far as hunting dogs are concerned... You never, ever, buy a dog from anyone other than a proper breeder! The mere thought of buying one from a Pet Shop is in fact severely frowned upon...

That's right... if you want to get yourself a "real" hunting dog, you find the finest breeder and pay an extravagant amount of money to make sure you get the dog with the best temperament and best nose possible... That's a "real" hunting dog!

Updated - USA Marketing Trip 2020

I exhibited at the Edmonton Boat and Sportsmen's Show in 2019 and returned home with mixed feelings. The oil price certainly didn't help to install confidence in a Canadian Province with so many folks making a living out of the oil business but within weeks after my return the dividends started showing with many of those whom I had met in Edmonton contacting me and booking their hunts. So I decided to return to Edmonton in 2020.

If only we knew what the next two weeks had in store for us...

Revised pricing on Kudu Trophy Fees for 2020

Over the past 16 years, we've built up an incredible reputation for the exceptional quality Kudu trophies our areas consistently produce. Examples of these can be found in our trophy gallery (Cody Slapak - 62.5", Mike Bauer - 58.5", Mark Sievert - 58.5", Karen Seginak - 56" to name but a few). It's noteworthy to mention that we've never charged by the inch.

However; it was also remarkable how many visitors to my booths this past show season stated that they wanted a chance at a minimum 55" Kudu bull during their hunt...
